Improvement of traffic signal control “LHOVRA” (»Add to Infobox)

Isolated traffic signal control in Sweden is normally traffic actuated using a special strategy called LHOVRA, which includes an incident reduction O function designed to reduce the number of vehicles in the dilemma zone. The experience from application of LHOVRA shows a reduced accident rate compared to conventional vehicle-actuated signal control, but the O function can cause safety problems, especially for vehicles with lower speeds.

It is difficult and costly to measure the impacts of LHOVRA only through field data collection. Therefore combinations of field studies of driver behaviour and micro simulation were used in a previous project (EMV) conducted at KTH (2002-2004) for analysis of safety and traffic performance impacts as functions of geometric design, detector configuration, speed limit etc.

A pre-study included a "state-of-the-art" report compiled from inventories and expert interviews. A workshop for the development of LHOVRA was held on August 29th, 2006 with the main stakeholders and signal equipment suppliers. Based on current knowledge, identified needs, and proposals for technological development of key LHOVRA functionalities, the workshop resulted in the production of an action plan for further development of LHOVRA. The goal is to improve LHOVRA functionality and impacts.
